Vitamin D

Now, high school biology was a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure the only chlorophyll I have in my body is currently being digested from lunch. Which is why it's so astonishing and neat that it's at the very instant I step outdoors on a sunny day like today that I feel immediately and completely energised, no matter how bleah I was getting due to, say, a big pile of exam grading.

I guess it has something to do with vitamin D. Or maybe I'll just claim to have veins running with chlorophyll. Either way, this is a great time of year. :)

Sad statement about the world today: they recommend giving infants vitamin D supplements and avoiding exposure to sunlight. If you must have your infant exposed to sunlight, strong sunscreen is recommended. All this because exposing infants to a bit of sun but not too much, is apparently bad as it call for exercising judgment. Also, there have been difficulties in issuing guidelines for minimum sun exposure, Those who traditionally provide such guidelines don't want to issue guidelines which call for using judgment. Also such the recommendation should vary by skin color and this will likely be a source for both misunderstandings and claims of racism. Kelly found one site that says 10-15 minutes twice a week. We'll see how that works. Posted by lee at 12:09am on 31 May 2007
